Each mug is thrown by hand on the wheel by me in my small studio in the Somerset Countryside.
Every mug begins with the wedging and weighing of a ball of clay which is then thrown on the wheel to create a mug shape. The mug is left to dry until not quite leather hard at which point I pull the handles on the mug so they are very much a part of the vessel rather than stuck on afterwards! The mug is then left to dry for a week to ten days before being fired over a period of three days to 950 degrees. Each piece is then glazed. I like to experiment with overlapping different glazes to create new colour combinations. All my glazes are mixed from powders and are food safe. The mug is then fired to 1240 degrees a final time.
These stoneware mugs are oven and dishwasher proof.
Each piece is unique to will vary in size by up to 10mm. I am not a production potter and make in small batches of 12/15 pieces and each piece is entirely unique which to me is the beauty of hand thrown pottery.
If you need a perfectly matching set then I’m not your girl!
My favourite quote from the godfather of studio pottery.
“It seems reasonable to expect that beauty will emerge from a fusion of the individual character of the potter, with the nature of his materials.” Bernard Leach
